Travel Vaadhoo Island: Iconic Landscapes, Alluring Beach With Sea of Stars And Beyond Beauty
Updated: Oct 21, 2022
Vaadhoo is one of the most alluring inhabited islands of Raa Atoll in Maldives. The tropical climate, balmy sea breeze, and moderate temperature make the island a year round holiday destination. Being located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Vaadhoo Island boasts one of the most romantic and evocative beaches, iconic landscapes and mesmerising beauty. When the sun goes down at Vaadhoo Island, the sea waves lapping the shore light up like a shimmering field of blue dots giving the sea the appearance of the starlit night sky.
Despite being a tiny island, holding less than 500 inhabitants, Vaadhoo has gained huge popularity around the globe because of its glow. Many travel enthusiasts call it the 'Sea of Stars' due to its glow in the dark which lights up the whole beach and seams as the real tiny stars from the sky are floating on the waters.

Relax on the beachside at night and delight your taste buds with local delicacies while watching the sunset over some of the world’s best landscapes. Gaze into the sky and see countless stars and the faint outline of the Milky Way. Look over at the inky-black Indian Ocean in the mid-distance. Then stare at the bluish glow and sparkling of the water lapping against the shore.

This illuminated phenomenon is produced by the phytoplankton, a set of small marine life forms in the plankton which is capable of synthesizing organic substances using solar radiation as a source of energy. The creatures emit light which is only seen in the dark at the night time. The beach in the Vaadhoo is filled with this light emitted microorganisms and microbes which have the natural capacity to produce a lively blue glow. This process in whole personifies the beauty of the beach and creates an incredible scenario to the visitors.
Travel Faroe Islands | Incredible Nature And Soothing Landscape
This incredible phenomenon occurs during the late summer months due to the growth of phytoplankton, or aquatic creatures that glow in the dark. But this magic does not happen every night, but several times a year, especially in the summer. As beautiful as this natural event is, don’t set your hopes too high. Nature, as always, is unpredictable, and even if you plan your trip for the late summer, it doesn’t mean you will see the sea of stars.

Vaadhoo also offers rich marine life and colourful corals around the island make it a hotspot for adventurous water sports. Feast your eyes on the multicoloured rays of the sun washing the waves while doing sea diving or kayaking. And when it turns dark, you can observe the stunning sea of stars as the waves crash against the canoe. You can also experience a relaxing spa session with deep tissue massage, pedicures, specialized facials and body scrubs, and rejuvenate your body.
